From the moment they enter Seseh village and cross the threshold of Villa Belong Dua, guests will experience the warm hospitality, history and culture of Bali. The name of the villa is taken from a stone water vessel, dating back to a time when these containers could be found in every household, and were used every day to store water for drinking and washing. Several original antique belongs are showcased at the villa, along with an antique ’jineng’, which is a traditional thatched Balinese rice barn and a symbol of social status, indicating that the family who owned it had land for rice culture. The jineng now serves as a place to relax or as a playhouse for kids. The villa’s imposing entrance gate is a copy of an 8th century Hindu temple gate at Angkor Wat in Cambodia and, after passing through this, guests will cross a lily pond complete with a bubbling water feature and a Balinese guardian statue. There is also an antique ’bale gede’ from Bali’s royal Gianyar regency. This lovely old open-sided pavilion made from the timber structure of a Balinese 2 bedroom pavilion was also used for Balinese ceremonies and is now used for relaxation and massage. Villa Belong Dua sits in a traditional street, which is well lit at night. A nearby pathway offers walks through the village to the river, rice fields and beach.

The living pavilion is located close to the main entrance, overlooking the garden and pool. Distinguished by a vaulted roof supported by eight wooden pillars, and open on three sides, it is furnished with a comfy, oversized daybed, and a low dining table sourced from a Javanese ’warung’ (eatery), surrounded by floor cushions. A large mirror reflects the sunny garden, and the pavilion is beautifully lit at night.

Behind the living pavilion is an air-conditioned media room, which doubles as an office it is fitted with built-in desks, sofa area equipped with a Satellite TV and DVD player.

The semi-open-air dining room shares a pavilion with the kitchen, and the two rooms are linked via a service bar that can be closed for privacy. The dining room is furnished with an antique table, six chairs, and an antique wooden chest on wheels, known as a ’gerobog’ originally used for storing rice. There is also an iPod and dock. The room is cooled by ceiling fans and natural breezes, and has the provision of electric blinds on the two open sides in case of rain or strong wind. A guest washroom is positioned to one side of the dining room. The immaculate polished kitchen is fully equipped with a five-burner gas hob and oven, fridge and everything else that the cook needs to create delicious meals.

The two bedrooms are in separate stand-alone pavilions named ’Menaga’ and ’Bangkat’, these names that go back to the time when the village of Seseh was much bigger and administratively divided into three ’banjars’ or local village councils. Each bedroom features an open-air terrace at the front, lit by colonial-style bell-jar lanterns; Bangkat’s terrace is furnished with an antique daybed on wheels, and Menaga’s terrace with a built-in cushioned daybed. Each romantic air-conditioned bedroom is furnished with a king-size netted bed upon a wooden floor complete with a shag pile rug, under a soaring roof. The walls are cream with terracotta tiling behind the bed, and each bedroom is equipped with a wall-mounted LCD screen satellite-channel TV and DVD player. Each bedroom opens into a delightful, air-conditioned bathroom, decorated in earthy tones. Bangkat’s bedroom has a charming, spacious dressing room off the bathroom, furnished with a wardrobe, chair and a dressing table that doubles as a desk. Bangkat bedroom boasts a recycled timber floor, and a dressing area with a built in wardrobe, a long mirror, and an antique dressing table. Each en-suite bathroom is fitted with a sculptured terrazzo bathtub for two, and double washbasins upon a terrazzo vanity unit, which faces a window to ensure plenty of natural light. Glass doors can be opened for a semi-alfresco bathing experience, complete with an outdoor rain shower set in a private walled courtyard with a pebbled floor and a serene Buddha statue. There is also a handheld shower in each bathtub, and a circular skylight that channels the moonshine.

The large garden at Villa Belong Dua is gorgeous, characterised by mature trees and open skies, with a dazzling 20 x 4 metre swimming pool as its central feature. The slate-lined pool is presided over by a Buddha head statue; it presents a separate shallow section for children and is bordered by a candi stone deck furnished with one double and two single Sunbrella sun beds. There is also the thoughtful provision of an outdoor pool shower. The fragrant landscaped garden has a velvety lawn, and is planted with coconut palms, frangipani, lemon and mango trees, pineapple plants, ginger and lemongrass. It is surrounded by a rustic wall crafted from crushed paras’s stone applied by hand and unpainted. A Balinese temple shrine rests in the northeast corner.

The antique ’bale gede’ is a traditional open-sided pavilion, originally used for Balinese ceremonies such as the Potong Gigi (Tooth Filing Ceremony), and now rests beside the swimming pool. Furnished with two timber built-in beds, some step stools taken from an old sugar cane press and a prayer table, it is a perfect spot for couples to enjoy a massage, or just chill out with a good book. It is constructed of twelve wooden pillars resting on paras’s stone plinths, which support a roof of radiating beam work crowned with alang alang thatch.

Location
A few kilometres to the northwest of Canggu, a towering banyan-one of the ’elders’ of the tree kingdom-heralds the turning to Seseh, a traditional beachside village approached via an avenue of coconut palms.

The village of Seseh still retains the customs and culture of old Bali. Here, you will see the rice being planted and harvested in the fields, fishing boats returning in the morning with the nights catch, as well as frequent, colourful processions to the large beachside temple. Living, Dining and Kitchen Area
The all in one large space, living, dining and kitchen in an open style design, takes in the view of the pool and the breathtaking rice fields. The living area to the right of the entry has many interesting features such as, the stereo system which is cleverly laid into the entry wall with speakers concealed in the rafters allowing music to float through the villa.

Set on grey tiles with a white border, the large U shaped sofa, to the right is made from concrete with green cushioned seating overlooking the pool and bale area opposite. Two footstools attach at either end of the sofa to add additional seating if required. On either side of the sofa is a raised platform for the table lamps and in front of the sofa a beautiful wooden table, cleverly designed to separate into four smaller coffee tables. Numerous wooden art pieces are displayed; behind the sofa 3 slivers of circular wood set between rectangular wall slits, to the far right and to the left large wooden curved balls and lastly a wooden stand with bowl on top. Each of these art pieces is special and adds to the luxurious detail within the property.

To the left of the entry is the dining area and kitchen. The dining room has a solid wooden table with unusually carved wooden stools seating 8 people. Behind the dining area, wooden barstools face the kitchen. Beautifully designed and a delight for any chef, the kitchen has sufficient crockery and cutlery to entertain guests and hotplate and large fridge are available to use. The tropical garden foliage is a picture bedside the kitchen and dining setting and artwork on walls surrounding, add to the colour of the landscape.

Bedrooms
There are three air-conditioned bedrooms on this property all with their own en-suite bathroom.

The master bedroom is located upstairs and overlooks the pool and the large grassed garden below. The other two bedrooms are located down a flight of stairs. A feature of these rooms is the use of glass both inside and out. Glass windows from top to bottom and glass doors leading to the outside provide natural light into the rooms. Taking from the natural environment the use of green and brown furnishing has been used extensively in the curtains and cushions. All rooms have a TV, writing desk and good-sized wardrobes.

Within the master bedroom a glass door leads to the bathroom. Frosted glass is used in this area to give additional privacy. An outdoor shower with rain shower tap faces a large mirror and a toilet and cream terrazzo double basin completes this area. To add a touch of greenery, a small garden is also located within. A glass door in the bedroom leads to the T shaped path and the sun lounges and pool.

To the left of the staircase, downstairs is the next bedroom. Designed with glass surrounds it features the same colouring as the other rooms. A large dot painting is placed over the bed head. The wardrobes are on either side of the writing desk that is opposite the bed. On the wall above are wooden artefacts. A glass door leads outside to the garden and another leads into the bathroom space where the shower wall is painted grey and features a large white triangular shape as part of the design. Two terrazzo basins and mirrors above, look out over the tropical landscape.

To the right of the staircase, the third bedroom is slightly different to the others. The special feature here is while lying in bed you can view the underneath of the pool. If however this disturbs your sleep, green curtains can block this view. The bathroom design is similar to the other bathroom with the triangular design concept being the focus. The glass internal doors lead to the bathroom and outside garden area.

Between the two downstairs bedrooms is a little pond and a large expanse of lawn with tropical foliage surrounding it. This area is certainly large enough to kick a football or have a soccer game.

Swimming pool
A large rectangular swimming pool with steps leading down from the living area is inviting. Four sun lounges with a couple of umbrellas to shade from the hot sun and a well proportioned bale that overlooks the rice fields and lush garden below, adds to that tropical feel.

It is a home away from home for your holiday – a traditional style villa close to Echo Beach with a beautiful, tranquil garden and swimming pool. The garden is home to many birds – in Bahasa Indonesia “burung”. Padang Linjong is 20 minutes to Seminyak but amazingly still “old Bali”, offering a traditional Balinese holiday experience.

Most people come to Canggu for a more relaxed holiday, away from the hustle and bustle of Seminyak shops and traffic, but still an easy drive for restaurants, shopping and spas.

We are a few minutes drive or a 20 minute walk from Echo Beach, famous for its surf breaks and cafes including the Beach House sunset seafood bbq. We are also near the Deus Ex Machina Temple of Enthusiasm – a fab new place where local expats hang out: great food, cool clothes, art gallery, live music, surfboard shaping, and motorbike customization. You can relax at the beach at the Tugu Hotel – find out if they have any music events on, they are always special evenings.

Life around you in Padang Linjong is still very traditional – it’s a great place to witness all the Balinese ceremonies and celebrations such as Nyepi, Galungan and Kuningan. There is a temple in our garden which will be visited daily for offerings by Made, or her daughters.

The house has a palatial King size bedroom upstairs with ensuite and aircon, lounge and large flat screen tv/dvd. Downstairs is a Queen Size room with en-suite and aircon. There is an ajoining room which also opens to the open lounge area which can be used as a childrens room or a reading room.

There are four part time staff at the house: Ketut the housekeeper, Wayan the gardener, Wayan the security guard and Yus looks after the pool. All the staffs are aware that you will want your privacy on your holiday so work only the times necessary to make your stay is comfortable and safe. The village, surrounded by a government protected rice field’s green belt, is becoming the preferred destination for high end customers, who prefer to: live immersed in the untouched traditional Balinese culture; enjoy almost private and unspoiled beaches; ride the waves in Seseh surfing spots; taste fresh fish provided directly from the fishermen; assist to real Balinese ceremonies in the local temples and relax in a tranquil atmosphere, without renouncing to the luxury of some of the most stylish and luxurious Villas in Bali and the proximity of the busy areas of Kuta and Seminyak. Seseh retains the customs and culture of old Bali. Cows are herded through the fields, rice is planted and harvested throughout year, and the sound of ritual music is carried on the breeze.

The Villa
The villa can accommodate up to ten guests; there are two Master Suites in the second floor, two independent Bungalows, and a fifth suite in the first floor all suites and bungalows have en-suite bathrooms. An entertainment room, an outdoor covered chill out, an internal patio, a wide veranda for alfresco dining, and a large swimming pool, almost overflowing its water into the river, completes the main areas of this remarkable villa. The style is unashamedly romantic, and the funky colonial architecture is enhanced by a thatched roof and a bold black, white and silver décor. The garden is suitable for weddings and parties with up to fifty guests.

Verandah, Outdoor Lounge, Pool and Garden
The property has a huge parking area with a Balinese temple flanked by numerous Bougainvilleas and is entered by a large silver gate. Guests will be greeted by a bubbling water feature and pink flowering bougainvillea. The villa is elevated above the garden, accessed by seven steps, and fronted by an impressive, raised, colonial-style veranda, complete with large round grey marble-effect pillars and silver Louvre doors.

Ever mindful of preserving the environment, the owners have demonstrated their respect for nature by building the property around a towering fig tree, which grows through the veranda and through the upstairs balcony and roof. All of the downstairs rooms open onto the breezy veranda, so this is the social hub of the villa, presenting a polished cement floor with a marbled effect. It is furnished with mats, cushions, and a dining table that can comfortably seat ten for an alfresco dining experience in real Bali style. Within the garden is another hang out, a large chill out area, big enough for 15 people, complete with low tables and speakers from the sound system; it is sheltered by a thatched roof.

The infinity-edge swimming pool measures 23 x 6 meters and is 1.2 meters in depth at the deep end with a shallow shelf for sitting and for kids. It is fed by three little waterfalls and bordered by a timber deck. It also features a wooden platform that appears to float on the surface of the water, complete with daybeds and a serene Buddha statue, making this a delightful and peaceful spot to relax and chill out. The garden is suitable for weddings and parties with up to fifty guests. At the back of the villa is a walled courtyard with a pebbled floor, flowering shrubs, and another Buddha statue.

Entrance Hall and Entertainment Room
The Entertainment Room is located next to the hall on the ground floor; this cozy air-conditioned snug is equipped with satellite TV, DVD and VRC players, stereo music system, and 24 hour free Wi-Fi Internet access, ceiling fans, a built-in desk, large mirror, a large comfortable daybed and a large low wooden centered table for more intimate meals. Colorful artwork adorns the walls and – with its striking orange and red tiled floor – this is the only room in the villa that doesn’t stay completely true to the black, white and silver theme.

Kitchen
The service kitchen is also located on the ground floor; it is well equipped and fitted with glass-fronted silver-door wall cupboards. It is here that the staff will prepare delicious meals and freshly squeezed fruit juices. The dining table is located next to the kitchen on the veranda.

Master Suites
Accessed by a flight of polished concrete stairs at the back of the villa, the two upstairs bedrooms offer guests two air conditioned suites. The glassed folding doors on either side allow for cross ventilation during the day time or during the night in case the guests prefer the natural breeze from the sea.

Both spacious bedrooms feature a wooden floor under the soaring roof, and both open onto a wide balcony at the front, furnished with white all season rattan sofas and presenting wonderful views of the river, the temple and the beach, which will lull guests to sleep with its peaceful melody.

Both Main Suites are dominated by a built-in king-size bed canopied with a diaphanous mosquito net. Furnished with comfortable arm chairs, built in dressing table and shelves, boasts plenty of storage space and a safe deposit box. One of the bedrooms en-suite open-air bathroom and features a black and white tiled floor, a washbasin on a black polished concrete vanity unit, a toilet and a rain shower.

First floor Suite
This suite is furnished with queen size bed and closets all in white polished cement, and is cooled by an air conditioning system and a fan. During the day the doors can be folded and completely open the room to the views. The en-suite bathroom in this bedroom repeats the covered opened air bathroom from the master suite upstairs: black and white tiled floor, a circular wall mirror, a washbasin on a black polished concrete vanity unit, a toilet and a rain shower.

River Bungalow
The air-conditioned River Bungalow is a charming self-contained guesthouse, located in the garden. As the name suggests, it borders the river and is characterized by a wrap around veranda complete with pillars and holes in the floor to accommodate living trees. Guests can sit immediately beside the shady river, where they might spot kingfishers or giant water lizards. The bungalow is entered by antique teakwood double doors and features teak floorboards, a high roof, a king-size bed, and safe deposit box. Wooden shutters add to the rustic charm. The adjoining bathroom has a dreamy sunken bathtub for two, a rain shower, washbasin, a toilet hidden behind an alcove, and plenty of storage space.

Pool Bungalow
The Pool Bungalow is located right beside the pool at opposite to the other Bungalow with its own personal pool deck. It is also next to the river, so guests can enjoy the constant sound of running water. It is similar in style to the River Bungalow complete with white walls, king-size bed, air conditioning, safe deposit box, and en-suite bathroom in polished cement walls and floors, with rain shower, stainless steel washbasin over a black polished cement table, and toilet.

Seseh is a traditional fishing village on Bali’s south west coast, nestled within the beautiful agricultural belt between Kuta and Tanah Lot. Seseh Beach boasts world-famous surf breaks, and is renowned for its panoramic coastline views and legendary sunsets. Rumah Matisse is only twenty-five minutes’ drive from the fashionable shops, world-class restaurants and vibrant nightspots of Seminyak, and about forty-five minutes’ drive from Bali’s International Airport.

Easily accessible sporting amenities include the neighboring ‘Canggu Club’, and the ‘Nirwana Bali Golf Course’, which was designed by Greg Norman and voted the number 1 golf course in Indonesia. For horse lovers, the ‘Umalas Equestrian Centre’ is just a few kilometers away, and the majority of the island’s tourist attractions are also within easy reach.

Accommodation
There are five air-conditioned bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms in Mahatma House. The two Master Bedrooms are located in the second floor with beds oriented towards the beach. Spectacular views can be seen during sunrise and sunset. Both master bedrooms offer audio visual facilities with: LCD TV, DVD player, IPod speakers, and internal telephone and safety boxes. There are two Garden Suites, housed in a standalone single storey pavilion on the far side of the swimming pool, and an additional Corner Suite on the ground floor of the main building oriented to sunset. Each of these suites has internal telephone and safety boxes. Four of the suites offer private sitting areas, where the guests can relax or have their private meals. Master Suites The Master Suites are stylish, minimalist and extremely spacious, each is flanked by a private, open air, roof terrace furnished with a double lounger. The Master Suites feature windows on three sides overlooking the garden, the beach, and a Balinese temple. The black, king size bed in each room is flanked by black side tables, and oriented towards the sea, with breathtaking views. There is also a chaise longue in the dressing area in front of the closets which are completely covered with mirrors to reflect the landscape views. The expansive en-suite bathrooms are each fitted with a luxurious black bathtub beside a wide window. There is a toilet on one side and a walk in rain shower on the other side. Despite the abundance of windows, guests’ privacy is cleverly protected by the one-way mirror glasses. A wide terrazzo vanity unit supports twin washbasins, and huge wall mirrors multiply the space. Fitted wardrobes provide plenty of hanging and storage space.

Garden Suites
The garden suites are each furnished with a built in king size bed, and each bedroom incorporates a sunken bathtub fashioned in black polished concrete, as well as a double washbasin. The toilet and the walk in rain shower are each located in separate private spaces behind doors. The garden suites open onto timber decks in private back gardens, as well as onto a private chill out area overlooking the pool. Corner Suite The fifth bedroom is accessed from the side garden. It is furnished with a built-in terrazzo bed, a desk, a stool and a chaise longue. A sliding door leads into the en-suite bathroom fitted with a walk-in rain shower, a single washbasin and a toilet. This is the smallest suite but with a lot of charm due to the ocean and sunset views.

Entrance, Living & Dinning Room
There are two entrances to the House. The pedestrian entrance is done through a classical Balinese three step portico framed by an antique wooden carved door, leading to the House entrance hall with an impressive stone worked waterfall sided by two ponds with golden fish inside. Both sides of the Entrance Hall lead to the open air living & dining area which takes up most of the ground floor, of the main building, incorporating a TV lounge, accessed by wide stepping stones over another ornamental pond and furnished with a large sofa, an armchair, and a cabinet of Buddha statues with a 50” LCD TV, a DVD player and a top quality 5:1 Home Cinema sound system. The living area itself is the central focus. Aligned with the swimming pool and overlooking the garden, it is cooled by two large ceiling fans with woven rattan blades, and furnished with rattan lazy chairs, circular ottomans and a substantial daybed scattered with silk cushions. A fat, smiling Buddha sits in one corner, a pile of gongs rests in another corner, and an antique timber wall panel adds a splash of jade green behind the daybed. The dining area is accessed by another set of stepping stones over a pond and is furnished with a table for ten, complemented by two different styles of dining chairs, arranged alternately with capacity for 12 people. There is also a guest toilet on the ground floor.

The Kitchen The fully equipped, open plan, feature kitchen is located beside the dining area for ease of service. The funky decoration displays the green lids of old, Indonesian ‘krupuk’ (rice cracker) jars. The kitchen contains all of the facilities that Mahatma House chef requires for the preparation of delicious meals, innovative buffets, and party snacks. Spa Services & Office Mahatma House offers internal spa services, including: facials, body treatment, various types of massage, pedicure, manicure, etc. provided by professional therapists on request at an extra charge.

Garden & Pool
The 18 m. x 6.40 m. swimming pool is a stunning feature which completes the symmetry of the property consisting of a four side water overflow with external walls and pathways covered with Andesite Flame stone and lightened underwater by 102 led lamps. The pool deck is furnished with umbrellas and sun loungers made from Sunbrella and all-weather rattan. The large garden with its flat lawn is ideal for weddings, parties and celebrations. A central chill out area at the end of the swimming pool is opened to the sky; it presides over the pool and offers an additional sitting area. Behind this is an impressive vertical rock garden with a water cascade and in its centre there is a fire pyre which is lightened every night to complete this magical environment.

The Villa
Villa Matahari is a sumptuous, two storeys, four bedroom villas, characterized by open air tropical living rooms and an abundance of light, glass and space. This contemporary property embraces symmetry and exudes style, fusing some of the traditional Balinese architectural elements: like the pavilions, and the four sloped roofs with the modern concept of space and featuring crisp white walls, white terrazzo floors, iron wood shingle roofs and decks, and high quality furnishings. It was completed in 2009 and has an interconnecting garden door to its sister villa Mahatma House, which presents a contrasting décor and theme next door. Master Suites
The Master Suites are stylish, minimalist and extremely spacious, each is flanked by a private, open air, roof terrace for relaxing. The Master suites bedrooms feature large windows on three sides overlooking the garden. The king size bed in each room is oriented towards the sea, and there is a built in desk behind the bed. The expansive en-suite bathrooms are each fitted with a luxurious bathtub beside a wide window. There is a toilet on one side and a walk in rain-shower on the other side. Garden Suites
The Garden Suites are each furnished with a king size bed, built in desk and fitted wardrobe. Sliding doors open to the en-suite bathrooms, each of which is fitted with double washbasins, a bathtub, a toilet and walk-in rain shower behind separate doors, as well as a long wall mirror, and built in shelves. Glass doors in the garden suites open onto timber decks in private back gardens, while another set of glass doors opens in each onto a sitting area overlooking the pool. Each of the Garden Suites have an iron wood deck terrace with a private open air but covered chill out area, designed for relaxing and for enjoying private meals. This Iron wood deck guides to the swimming pool deck, to the main chill out, and to the other Garden Suite located at the other side of the swimming pool, giving it a sense of unity and reminding the deck of a port.

Entrance, Living & Dinning Room
The main access to the house, leads to the entrance hall through two huge ironwood sliding doors, that when opened, allows to see a handmade stone waterfall with the symbol of the house, an antique wooden carved retro-illuminated Matahari, which in Bahasa Indonesia means “sun” coming from Mata = eye and Hari = day, “the eye of the day”. The Hall is flanked by two ponds with two enormous `made in situ´ white stone Buda heads, acting as waterfalls. The living and dining room area is open on three sides and covers most of the ground floor of the main building. The open plan design incorporates a TV lounge, accessed by wide stepping stones over an ornamental pond and furnished with a daybed. Complete with a 50’’ LCD TV, DVD player and a top quality 5:1 Home Cinema sound system. The living area itself is the central focus. Aligned with the swimming pool and overlooking the garden, it is cooled by three ceiling fans. Presiding the space, there is a sitting Buda which is lightened during the night and reflects in the water of the swimming pool, giving and extraordinary sense of tranquility. It is only 5 minutes away from Tanah Lot, one of the main temples of Bali. It is also convenient for all of Bali’s shopping malls and main tourist attractions. Rooms
East Residence and Spa comprises a main, two-storey building and a one-bedroom Rainforest Cottage resting among the gardens. Completed 2008, the property is in immaculate condition; its facilities and appliances gleaming new. With whitewashed walls, natural breezes and plenty of sunlight streaming in, a light and airy ambience prevails.

The heart of this home from home is the open-plan living-dining room which leads off to two adjoining kitchens, a TV room, office and two guest washrooms. From here, a solid wood staircase rises to the first floor and four of the villa’s five en-suite bedrooms. The living-dining room extends out to the infinity-edge pool and deck area, where stone steps cut through three terraces of exquisite gardens, leading down to the Balinese open-air lounge pavilion (Open Living), the spa and four thatched bales.

The villa compound is reached by a driveway with garage (maximum parking four cars) and staff quarters on the right-hand side. On arrival, guests are led through a side-entrance of wood doors, stone statues and an alang-alang (Balinese thatch) roof, to a delightful koi-filled water feature and porch reception area.

Bedrooms
The four bedrooms in the main building, including the master bedroom, are equally spaced off the first floor landing, affording some privacy. A fifth bedroom rests separately in Rainforest Cottage. All five bedrooms feature air conditioning (no ceiling fans), king-sized beds and fine white cotton bedding. Bathrooms are contemporary and stylish, with glass cubicle showers, while furniture is high quality, modern Indonesian. Delightful traditional touches include high bamboo- and grass-roofed ceilings. Bathroom amenities stored in Balinese offerings boxes and Indonesian art works adorning the walls. In total, the villa sleeps ten adult guests, but provides a baby cot (foldable) and extra rollaway bed.

First-floor master bedroom
The largest of the first floor bedrooms, the master bedroom boasts a generous-sized bathroom with sunken bathtub and his and hers sinks. Additionally, the expansive floor space allows room for couches and an ottoman. A 52-inch plasma TV is provided for DVD viewing.

First-floor guest bedrooms
The three bedrooms on the first floor are relatively similar in size and decor and all have spacious balconies with outdoor furniture. On clear days you can see Mount Agung, an active volcano and Bali’s highest peak, from bedrooms one and two. Arguably, bedroom three (the room furthest from the stairs) offers the best rice-field, sunset and sunrise views, which can be enjoyed from an antique Indonesian chaise langue.

Rainforest Cottage
This lovely one-bedroom lodge, resting below the pool and beside the diminutive River Subak, makes for a wonderfully romantic bolt-hole. Surrounded by natural foliage, the entrance porch features an antique African chaise langue, while a second porch, facing the rainforest, supplies table and chairs. A 39-inch plasma TV is available for DVD viewing (with DVDs provided).

Open to the elements, the tropical-style bathroom features a stand-alone bathtub, glass cubicle shower, sink and toilet and takes in rainforest views and waterfall sounds. Modesty prevails with a curtain of banana plants and concertina-style, opaque panelling.

Living, Dining and Kitchens
Through the villa’s main entrance, comprising traditional-style, hand crafted wood doors. The living-dining room is an expansive, oblong-shaped area offering contemporary style yet informality and comfort. Encircled by glass doors and sheer white curtains, this open-plan room lets in plenty of natural light, while the central sofa section is the perfect vantage point for the infinity-edge pool just outside. Ceiling fans and breezes through open doors allow a pleasant airiness. Like elsewhere, furniture and furnishings is contemporary Indonesian, with high-quality finishing, while traditional local touches include charming hand-carved Balinese statuettes.

On the right-hand side there is a large antique wooden dining table (protected by a glass top) seating for ten. The generous-sized open-plan guest (dry) kitchen, just behind, is bordered by a raised counter of solid Borneo wood and within, features granite counter tops. Well-equipped and well-stocked, the kitchen boasts an Italian oven, five-ring cooker (electricity and gas) and large refrigerator. Behind a partition is the staff (wet) kitchen and walk-in pantry, plus a discreetly positioned guest washroom.

To the right of the gardens, almost submerged in a rainforest setting and near a scenic waterfall, rests ‘Open Living’ – the Balinese open-air lounge pavilion. Traditional touches include a rustic-style high ceiling, with bamboo blinds offering protection from the elements. This makes a gloriously peaceful spot for afternoon teas and sundowners as daylight fades through the trees. Seating includes sofas and a dining table accommodating eight. Adjoining here is a small kitchen plus an attached guest washroom; open-air, it comes discreetly framed by bamboo blinds.

‘Open Living’ is ideal for informal gatherings, lunches and receptions; a simple barbecue is on-hand and a sound system runs to here and next-door neighbor, the spa.

TV Room and Office
On the opposite side of the living-dining room, a TV Room features comfy sofas and a 58-inch, high density plasma TV, transmitting 89 international and 10 local TV channels plus 17 radio stations. If that’s not of interest, a stack of DVDs are provided.

The Office features iPod dock and iPod (another set is stored in the kitchen), desktop computer with Broadband ADSL, fax, printer and CD player/stereo system. There’s a small selection of novels, a CCTV security monitor available for guest use, and an adjoining guest washroom. You can access Wi-Fi Internet in the living-dining room and beside the pool.

Pool, Garden and Bales
Leading out from the living-dining room, is a stunning infinity-edge pool (20 x 6m, 1.2m depth). Maintained daily, the pool has a separate, shallow kid’s area, and sunken bar section with submerged bar stools, and ornamental islands. Materials used include black volcanic stone and Italian ceramic tiles. The expansive deck provides four comfy sun beds plus tables and chairs, perfect for outdoor snacking.

Once jungle and now defined by terraced landscaping, the exquisite gardens fall naturally into three distinct levels, dissected by the River Subak and bordered by a second (unnamed) river. Accessed by large-sized stone steps, the gardens feature sloping manicured lawns and tropical blooms and plants, water features and Buddhist stone statues.

At the bottom, edged by a burst of rainforest, three bales rest peacefully on a ledge beside the shaded riverbank, making an idyllic setting for yoga, massage and meditation (another bale is located to the right of the pool).

The river is fenced off and marks the property border. Should you wish to explore the riverbank and steep rainforest embankment opposite, ask the gardener to open the gate. The gardens, pool-deck and stone steps are all prettily lit-up at nighttime.

SPA
Set below the main building, next door to ‘Open Living’ and beside a rain forested riverbank and waterfall, the villa’s private spa comprises a detached pavilion with alang alang roofing. Within, a modern-style treatment room is furnished with two massage beds, while outside is a charming open-air bathroom with traditional stone bath, edged by tropical foliage, bamboo blinds and concertina-style, opaque panelling. A river deck, or porch, directly faces the rainforest and features two vintage leather recliner chairs. Treatments – and yoga – can also be enjoyed in four thatched bales, located within the grounds.

The villa has 10 full-time local staff with their own on-site staff quarters located just outside the main compound.
